The DC I Never Knew

dcscott

I have been living in the Washington DC area for almost 10 years and this weekend I had a chance to explore four new places in DC that I had never experienced.  Whether you are a long-time resident or in town visiting, here are some must-sees that you can do during an afternoon to the nation’s capital.

  • A visit to the United States Botanic Garden: Be ready to soak in the variety of flowers from around the world. From orchids to native desert plants to those found in our 50th state, this is a place where you’ll definitely want to bring your camera to take those stunning photos. Admission is free and it’s a great escape if you need to warm up from the cold outside.

  • Ben’s Chili Bowl:  Want some good home cookin’?  Head to this DC food landmark on U Street. Must eats include the half-smoke, chili burger, chili and cheese fries as well as a chocolate milkshake. This is one place where you need to forget about the cholesterol and calories.  If you are lucky, you may even spot a celebrity.  When you go, say hi to Vida. She is one of the owners and is as friendly as can be.  Credit cards aren’t accepted so bring cash; food, drinks, and dessert for two will ring in at around $20.

  • Constitution Gardens:  A photographer’s dreams could come true when visiting this park. The park, which includes a lake, a memorial to the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and a nice walkway, provides a nice view of the Washington Monument. Geese and ducks call this pond home so be prepared to watch where you step when on the grounds.

  • Theodore Roosevelt Island:  An island located in the Potomac River, this area provides a hiking path and great views of Georgetown and downtown DC.  Bring good walking shoes when exploring this area and get lost in the woods and nature.
