• Brazilian Shrimp Stew (Moqueca de Camarão)

Growing up in the northeast of Brazil, seafood was frequently part of our daily meal. And every summer vacation we spend at our family beach house in the very renowned beach town of Porto de Galinhas.  I was around 10 when Ze, a local fisherman, took my brother and I to catch some shrimp for our cook Lindalva  to make us dinner.  Noboby cooks a better seafood recipe than people who were born and raised in this beach town, everything is absolutely delicious! When I moved to the States in my teens, Lindalva gave me a recipe book with my favorite recipes from my childhood. That book still fills me with wonderful memories…

  • Roasted Beet Risotto

Beets are one of my favorite vegetables, and I use them in a variety of ways in my kitchen; in my favorite  orange, carrot and beets morning juice, as a natural red/pink  food colorant, in beet and potato gnocchi, and in one of our house favorites, an easy beet caprese salad. Ingredients: 1 cup pureed roasted beets (wash and wrap 2 small beets with foil and roast for 35-40 min, peel and puree in a small food processor) 1 cup of arborio rice 1/3 cup of white wine 2.5 cup…

And when I spotted these cute pie molds from Williams-Sonoma on sale, I couldn’t resist buying and testing them right when i got home. I had a box of store-bought pie dough in my fridge already, so I just chopped the apples, tossed them with cinnamon, brown sugar, a dash of lemon juice (see my Apple Pie in a Jar post for the filling recipe). Cut the shapes out of the pie dough Fill shapes with apple pie filling, or even a jam or savory filling Press down to seal and crimp the edges Brush top of pies with egg wash…

  • Apple Pie in a Jar

A couple weeks ago we took our annual trip to a beautiful orchard in Northern Virginia for a fun day of apple picking. This year we chose Hollin Farms. We’ve been to Hollin Farms several times for strawberry picking, but it was our first time there for apples, and it turned out there was a LOT more in season than just apples! The farm is about 45 minutes from Washington DC and goes straight through Virginia wine country. There are several great wineries to stop at for a glass, or just a scenic picnic. But hey, apple picking is way more fun after a few glasses of vino, wouldn’t you agree? We came home…
